The court cases

WhenWhat happened
Since 2018Kannamwar Nagar residents in the Bombay High Court over odour from the site.
2 May 2025Bombay High Court, on a petition by the trust Vanashakti, quashes the de-notification of 119.91 ha: the land is protected forest again.
1 Aug 2025The Supreme Court stays that ruling. The BMC keeps using the site.
7 May 2026In the odour case, the High Court calls odour and emissions the most disturbing issue before it, reaching Mulund, Bhandup, Kanjurmarg and Vikhroli.

Both cases were open when this guide was updated. A final ruling on the forest question could change what happens at the site; check the latest before you buy.

How far each project is

Straight-line distance from each project’s mapped point to the landfill’s edge, as mapped on OpenStreetMap. Distance alone doesn’t tell you how much you’ll smell it; it tells you where to start asking.

1How to judge it yourself

How much a flat is affected depends on more than distance: the hour, the season and the wind all change it. Only a visit at the wrong time tells you.

Two visits

How to check

  1. Find the project on a map and measure to the landfill’s edge, not its centre.
  2. Visit once in daytime and once late at night or early in the morning. Kannamwar Nagar residents say the smell is worst between 1 am and 6 am.
  3. Ask people already living nearby, and the society office if the building is occupied, how often it reaches them.
  4. Check whether the Supreme Court has ruled on the forest question since this guide was updated.

Watch out for

  • Show-flat visits only at midday.
  • Brochures that give distances from the sales office, not the site.
  • Claims that the landfill is closing: as of this guide, it is operating under the Supreme Court’s stay.
